Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup (with Orzo)

This homemade chicken noodle soup is made from scratch with bone broth, tender chicken, carrots, garlic, and orzo noodles. A nourishing, cozy comfort food perfect for cold days.

There’s nothing more comforting than a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup simmering on the stove. This simple, nourishing version uses rich bone broth, tender shredded chicken, and delicate orzo noodles for a cozy, from-scratch meal that feeds both the body and soul. Made with everyday pantry ingredients and real fats like lard, butter, or olive oil, this soup is perfect for cold days, sick days, or anytime you need a wholesome, comforting bowl of food. Serve it with an artisan loaf or homemade crackers for a truly satisfying meal. With the addition of cooking your noodles directly in the soup loaded with bone broth the noodles become more flavorful and packed with the nutrition from the broth.

I purchase my Orzo Noodles from Azure Standard

  1. In a large pan melt your lard/butter/olive oil and add in your diced onion, chopped garlic and diced carrots.
  2. Sauté for 3-5 minutes until onions are translucent.
  3. Carefully pour in your broth, reserving extra if needed later.
  4. Add in your uncooked noodles, shredded chicken and spices.
  5. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer for 30 minutes until orzo is fully cooked, feel free to leave longer to bring the flavors together.
  6. Remove bay leaf and serve with an artisan loaf or homemade crackers of your choice.

TIPS:

It’s a pretty classic recipe that I created and put in my homemade cookbooks back in 2017, with a little touch up I finally am publishing it online. I hope you enjoy it! We generally reach for this when sickness hits but it’s a crowd please, so fill and very nutritious, especially when you allow the noodles to be cooked directly in the bone broth.

Cook a whole chicken by either using a crockpot or roasted and using the leftovers to create this easy and quick soup.

Use the leftover bones from the chicken to create a nourishing bone broth in the crock pot.
