Accidental Pig Farmers

My friends being accidental pig farmers ain’t easy.  There’s always so many moving parts when your dealing with animals. The care, the food, the water, the living, the processing, you get the point.

Watch this quick video HERE – I called it homesteading problem #206466 or something like that. Because it’s always something on the homestead and this something was in regards to the pigs.  We currently have 19 pigs here on the homestead and like I said we are accidental pig farmers. Nature has gotten away from us which is for another story that I guarantee will be a good one.

This Wednesday night 3 of our larger pigs (these were the piglets that was born here on the homestead last July) it was suppose to be their last night and they were suppose to march right up into the trailer that we parked near their area days before. But apparently they had other plans and there was no coaxing that could change their minds at all. So the trailer sat empty, the processor notified that they would not be getting the 3 pigs that day.

So what’s the problem? Well, as mentioned above we have quite a bit of pigs…..

We need them to go in a bit at a time so we do not have to buy another freezer.

I prefer not to keep feeding them premium organic feed when they are more than ready.

I’m almost out of ground pork. (It’s my favorite)

And you see it’s worked before, we’ve been pig farming for I believe 6 years now. We’ve done it all sorts of ways. This video below is from 4 months ago.

But God has another plan for us and today my husband was able to get a hold of a local butcher that comes directly to the farm and takes care of a lot of the dirty work (I won’t get into that right now), so they will be “handled” here and then taken back to the shop for the remaining of the processing.  So let me explain why this is so much better. We care very much for our animals, we believe in giving them a great life.  Happy animals = happy meat. It’s important for us that stress does not make it’s way into their lives.  This way everything happens here on the farm and the stress of getting loaded onto a trailer and taking a ride to an unknown location doesn’t even cross their minds or their cortisol levels.

So yes God had another plan.  We are looking forward to this new option (hoping this coming week) and I will continue to share in the Accidental Pig Farmer saga.

Onto other news! It’s nearing Mother’s Day so if your looking for some awesome Laura approved Kitchen Item Gifts, look no further than my Mother’s Day Gift Giving Guide!

A Recipe Reminder!!   Today was a busy dayhttp://https://foodprood.com/mothers-day-gift-giving-guide/ and lots’ still to accomplish so for dinner we had smoked chicken with Jd’s Meat Rub along with Homemade Tator Tots, left over mac and cheese + canned corn from last year’s garden.

The tator tots we made in bulk about 2 months back, portioned them off into vacuum sealed bags and I popped one out and put them in the oven at 425 degrees F for 20 minutes and boom, done!! No weird ingredients, just tators and some spices and cheese! Your welcome.
