Starting New

Spring brings such hope in all things.  Our weather FINALLY broke this week and we are able to get outside and actually see the ground. You can feel the excitement in the air with the sun shining, the birds singing and the dirt just calling my name. And oh yes it has been.

It also brings a feeling of overwhelming – all the things that “need” to get done. New logs need to be cut to expand our garden, the bee’s need to be rearranged,  compost needs to be turned, a new one started, seeds need to be planted, things need to be trimmed and cleared, fences for the animals need to be fixed, trees cut down for next year’s heat, and the list goes on.

I love it, I really truly do. It’s all very physical and mental work and it can be darn tootin’ hard sometimes, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Like full on top notch rewarding. It feels so good.  Sometimes when I get the rare chance I’ll sit bit a bit and just watch things and look around and smile. If you saw me you may laugh or think I’m crazy. But I really do just marvel  where we are in  life, what we’ve been given  by the Lord Almighty- how he’s given us the land, the opportunity but more importantly the drive to get it all done and love it.

I don’t tell you all of this to make you roll your eyes at my glass half full approach. (because It’s not always roses while you’re in the trenches of homesteading)  But  I want you to see that it’s possible for you to.  You can Start New to.  In all the things. But I’ll keep it contained to just gardening . Maybe you can’t grow most of your own food, or have 15,000 sq feet of garden spaces and that is OK!! Can you do a raised bed? A few containers? No land, how about growing on a balcony? How about indoors with a grow light? It works year round (I’ve tried it!). How about focusing on your favorite things? Creating a salsa garden anyone?  If you already garden how about give your hand at seed starting instead of buying plants, how about seed saving at the end of the year?  Can we add in another box or till up more space?

Let’s start a new year with a new hope that yes we can do it!
Even a small step is still a step forward. You’ll be glad you did.
