Seeds- Kitchen Sink Casserole, say what? – Tostadas

It’s almost February and I am in super garden planning mode. Well not so much planning, like day dreaming of the sunshine and barefeet. I recently went through the Baker Creek seed catalog , wrote down many many things, went back through and focused on what I know I wanted to plant this year and marked one’s I would like to try in the future.  I ended up only purchasing 8 packets, quite a record for me to keep it that low! I seed save many many things, but I still like to purchase seeds to keep trying new things, seeing what I can improve upon and some are just fun! So what did I buy?

Atomic Purple Gomphrena (I grow all things purple) – It’s an herb that I plan to research more for medicinal uses, it’s a great cut flower, and I read it makes a great purple tea! Sounds fun!!

Cayenne Pepper – well if you’ve read my previous blog post from January 7th you’ll know why I want Cayenne Pepper growing this year to! It heals!

Butterfly Pea Blue Queen – This one sounds so much fun! “Our favorite kid-friendly drink; when you add a drop of lemon to the deep blue tea, the color instantly turns a bright pink, like magic! Natural Pink Lemonade, anyone?”  Plus it’s an edible ornamental flower. I’m sold!

Horehound – Another medicinal herb I’m adding to my Herb/Cottage garden it tastes like licorice and I hear its’ really good for coughs.

Dandelion Pink – Yes PINK!! How amazing is that?!?! Dandelions are edible and medicinal, and this one is pink. Yep, I’m sold!

Marigold  Colossus Red Gold Bicolor – This one is really cool, the petals are edible and it helps repel garden pests!

Bonny Best– I wanted an extra pack of these – they are one of my favorite tomatoes along with Tappys Heritage.

Buckwheat – This is really pretty and helps fix the soil. You can also eat the seeds and it’s great for the bee’s!

Besides daydreaming of the sun I’ve put up two new recipes. One is a Casserole- I call it Everything But The Kitchen Sink” Casserole. Why? Because literally you can use this recipe as your base and alter it to whatever you may have on hand.  Adding the fried onions and cheese on top gives it a delicious layer! The other recipe is one of our favorites, Corn Tostadas! I make Carnita meat with our own raised pork and we use that on everything including creating these Tostadas.  But the great thing about these is you do not need to have pork, you can put anything on them! Shredded chicken, steak, beef, beans and all the delicious toppings! They are simple to make and easy to hold and eat.
