Are you a Consumer or a Producer?

PLUS My Full Grow Room (greenhouse) Tour!

Let’s take a look inside my grow room where grow all my own seedlings to feed my family & more.

Oh yes, I will absolutely admit that I am so fortunate to have a Grow Room. Seriously, who can say that?  But with that said, I’ve been growing seedlings for many years and only the last few years have I been able to utilize such a Taj Mahal.  I’ve started them in the house using T4 lights, racks, tables, my kids shovels, dirt tracked everywhere, bungee cords, chains and zip ties.  Whatever I had on hand I utilized. Every hand me down old broken up pot and newspaper pots have been used. And everything works!   But with all the mistakes and dirty  hands I’ve been able to perfect my growing endeavors and now able to share with all of you!

Before we dive into the FULL grow room tour let’s talk about how I view the world of being a Consumer or a Producer.  Which are you?  In my heart for many many years it’s been pulling at me to be more of a PRODUCER rather than a Consumer. Sure I could totally just go and buy those tomatoes and make my life so much easier, but that’s not what I feel is right.  I look at the world differently, God has given me the ability to PRODUCE instead of just consuming.

Plus let’s take a look at this practically – Store bought VS Home Grown

  1.  Nutritional Value – Do I need to even go into this?
  2. Taste!! Ya’ll the taste its amazing when it’s fresh picked
  3. Organic – I know what’s in my soil, what I used and how I used to grow it
  4. Control – Yes a lot has to do with control, I know everything that went into it
  5. Pride – The amazing feeling know that YOU did it, it’s beyond words

I encourage YOU right now to take a look at what your consuming and see what you can PRODUCE instead. Don’t let the excuses flow in that your to busy, you don’t have the space, you don’t have the money.  I”m here to tell you that there are ways around all of this.

We are all very busy you get to choose what you are being busy with.  If you lack space you can grow indoors, in containers, on your balcony, etc.  And for the money, think about the skills you would be accumulating by growing a few things instead of just buying from the store. Those skills are priceless, and what if you were able to pass those skills onto others?  And your own food is healthier by far than store bought.

Now onto the Garden Seedlings in the Grow Room (Greenhouse)

There’s quite a bit going on this year in the grow room including peanuts, kiwi and many vegetables.  You’ll see a full tour of what everything is, problem solving with seedlings, what I’m growing and how everything is running.  Right now there’s about 600 + seedlings that are nice and tidy in 50 cell flats, but very soon things will be exploding out the door when they need to be potted up into 4″ pots. It’s crazy but oh so beautiful!

Sources for Tools:

Favorite Seed Starting Tools

1.Heat Mat’s (Waterproof, germinates seeds faster with more accuracy)
2. Lights – AeroGarden AeroGarden 45W LED Grow Light    (Use these for small setups)
or Vivarspectra XS1500 150W LED Grow Lights – Depending on your setup

Containers-

-Use trays to fit your needs (I use a 50 cell plug trays) Make sure to have holes in the bottom for drainage.

– You will also need a heavy duty tray that does NOT have holes. This will be used for the seeds on the heat mat as well as when you transplant into larger containers. – A 2 inch dome is plenty of height to cover your seeds at first. This will be removed when they are placed under the light.

– You will need 4 inch pots to transplant seedlings into until after frost.

Green House Megastore – www.greenhousemegastore.com

Heat – Seedling Heat mat (no particular recommendations, there’s a lot to choose from)

-Germinates seeds faster

-Waterproof construction

-Automatically warms rooting area 10-20F over ambient temperature

Note: Once your seeds have sprouted (especially tomatoes) remove from heat source by either transplanting or removing until the seedlings are bigger. This will depend on if other seeds have sprouted or just a few random one’s.  Place under your light source.

Light – It is important to give adequate light to your seedlings and plants. A light in the window during the winter will most likely not be enough.  Read the instructions on whatever light you choose, they all have a range on how far away they should be positioned from the top of the plants. Usually lights run for 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Note: I use a timer you can buy from TSC that you can have it set automatically.
