🎃 How to Grow Squash (Beginner Friendly Guide)

Winter Squash & Pumpkins

Squash is one of the most generous crops you can grow. From zucchini to pumpkins, these plants produce heavily and feed a family well into winter.

The squash family includes:

🌱 Planting Basics

Spacing

Squash plants grow fast once established.

Soil Health Tip

If you notice blossom end rot (soft, dark spots on the bottom of fruit), it’s often a calcium issue.

Adding lime can help:

Healthy soil = healthy squash.

Common Squash Pests

Squash Bugs

Gray-brown bugs that feed on leaves and stems.

Cucumber Beetles

Yellow-and-black beetles that chew young plants and spread disease.

Vine Borers

Cause sudden wilting by tunneling into stems.

(I personally don’t often struggle with these — but it can happen.)

More detailed pest management strategies are included in my book.

🌿 How to Harvest

Zucchini

(Zucchini does not store long term like winter squash.)

🏡 Curing & Storage

Winter squash must cure before storage.

When properly cured, they’ll be ready for soups, pies, and cozy meals all season long.

For long-term storage, I often:

  1. Roast at 350°F until fork-tender
  2. Scoop flesh
  3. Freeze in bags

(Full roasting guide, freezing tips, and recipes are inside the book.)

Growing squash is simple — but mastering harvest timing, curing methods, storage longevity, and turning it into real meals is where it all comes together.

You’ll find the complete squash chapter — plus planting calendars, preservation methods, and recipes — inside Seed to Plate.
