Cleaning Up After the Mass Devastation from the Ice Storm in Northern Michigan
Homestead Clean-Up After the “Once in a Lifetime” Ice Storm
The clean-up continues here in Northern Michigan after what they’re calling it our “once in a lifetime” ice storm. The devastation is overwhelming — massive trees down, fences crushed, and a to-do list that feels never-ending. When you’re striving for self-sufficiency, everything seems to depend on something else getting done first!
Today’s mission: tackle the back corner of the pig area where several enormous trees have collapsed over the fence. But first, we need to get the tractor and chainsaw back there to even begin.
In this video, I walk you through the damage, show the path to the fallen trees, and share what needs to be done to move the pigs out of my garden and into greener pastures for the summer. I need them out of there so I can finally start planting!
Justin, my husband (and resident chainsaw expert with 20+ years of experience), takes on the risky work of clearing the trees. It’s not just about cutting — these downed trees are massive and tangled, creating dangerous situations that require careful maneuvering.
Thanks to the chainsaw, the Kubota, and his new favorite tool — the grapple (aka the “chomp chomp”) — things go surprisingly smoothly.
UNTIL…
Well, you should never say, “That was too easy,” right? Let’s just say things take a turn. 😅
Will we get the tractor unstuck? You’ll have to watch to find out!
