gardening midwest homesteader michigan laura lawrence seed to plate

Laura Lawrence

Hi Reader

My garden currently looks like I gave up sometime in August.

Brown bean pods. Bolted lettuce. Droopy sunflowers. Baseball-bat zucchinis. Weeds. Chaos.

It’s beautiful.

Okay…maybe beautiful is a stretch.

But I’m leaving it that way on purpose. And perhaps you are doing it for the same reason as me 😉

Because hidden inside all that ugly is next year’s garden.

Those crispy bean pods? Seeds.

That lettuce that shot up and looks ridiculous? Seeds.

That tomato past its prime? Next year’s tomato sauce.

And those giant zucchinis you normally pawn off on neighbors you don’t particularly like? Yep. Seeds. 😂

I even show you my Purple Podded Pole Beans that I originally bought in 2014—and haven’t bought seed for since.

THAT is what I call Money in the Bank.

So before you start ripping everything out because your garden isn’t Instagram pretty anymore…

Come walk through my disaster with me.

Turns out ugly gardens can be pretty dang productive.

Learn it. Grow it. Use it.

God Bless,
Laura

P.S. Be honest: Does your garden currently look like a beautiful fall oasis…or like mine got together with yours and threw a party?

About

Welcome to my Blog- I’ll share with you what our Homestead looks like and how we raise 80% of our food, all organically, sustainably, naturally and beautifully.

I’m hoping to inspire you that you can do this as well! God has provided our family with all the things, but the big thing He has given us is the drive to get ‘er done! We didn’t start out with all this, we started very slow, replacing one thing at a time, learning one thing at a time.
