I have a confession.

I don’t trust next year’s garden.

I trust God. I just don’t trust my vegetables to cooperate.

Case in point: one year my banana peppers went absolutely gangbusters. We had peppers coming out our ears.

The next year?

Zip. Zero. Zilch.

Gardens are fickle little things.

That’s exactly why I grow the way I do. Instead of trying to grow just enough for our family of five, I hedge my bets.

Some crops fail. Others produce like they’ve got something to prove.

And when God provides?

I preserve.

That’s how one garden can give our family roughly two years worth of food—not because every crop produces two years worth, but because the whole homestead creates a buffer.

And there’s something else I’ve started calling all of this:

Money in the Bank.

Every seed you learn to save.
Every potato you learn to grow.
Every jar you learn to preserve.
Every meal you learn to make from what you already have.

Nobody can take that skill away from you.

And THAT is worth a whole lot more than another trip to the grocery store.

Learn it. Grow it. Use it.
