How to help your Herbs, Lettuce & Spinach Types

BEAT THE HEAT

help your herbs lettuce spinach beat the heat

It’s a scorcher out there folks and in order to maximize our hard work of planting all those lovely seeds here are some of my tips to help Beat the Heat!

Hey Friends- it’s hot out there and weย  need to save our heat sensitive crops such as Lettuce, Spinach, and Herbs (I use a lot of cilantro) and this heat is telling them to “Bolt”.

What’s Bolting meant?ย  It’s basically telling them that the conditions are not good and they need to go to seed in order to reproduce when the conditions are right again. It’s a self preservation technique which is quite admirable I say. How to tell? The leaves of say Cilantro will start to change what they look like and typically among all the things a larger stalk out of the middle will start to pop up and VERY quickly to. Which then I will cut to encourage it to keep growing.

How to help them NOT go to Bolt?

  • Trim Often
  • Trim in the Morning
  • Trim even if they did go to Bolt
  • Trim if they are about go to go Bolt
  • Trim even if you are not ready

Basically TRIM – Trim and Trim!

When to Trim? In the morning is best as early as possible (The heat will make them very wimpy and sometimes not get back to crunchy)

Get them rinsed under cold water, drain and store in the fridge.

You can also use this technique to help them all year (or whatever your growing season is) to keep producing for you.

About

Welcome to my Blog- I’ll share with you what our Homestead looks like and how we raise 80% of our food, all organically, sustainably, naturally and beautifully.

I’m hoping to inspire you that you can do this as well! God has provided our family with all the things, but the big thing He has given us is the drive to get ‘er done! We didn’t start out with all this, we started very slow, replacing one thing at a time, learning one thing at a time.
