Garden Journal Challenge

garden journal challenge

Welcome to the Garden Journal Challenge! I’m so glad you are here.

I’m really excited to start this challenge off, wanna know why? I realized my memory of last year’s garden is not always accurate. Wait, when did the zucchini start coming in?  The weather was totally hot right? Was I able to preserve as much as we needed last year?

Oh how about the years gone by?  There’s been plenty of year’s since I’ve been gardening and they start to become a blur. That’s why I’m so glad I started writing in a notebook/journal years ago.  I’m able to review so many things! I started writing things down in 2014 (I gardened for about 5 years prior to that)

What prompted this was the weather- the weather this year has been way off course and a local weather station posted the rain amounts WAY lower than what we actually had here. It made me realize how micro climate each of our own yards basically are, and how important it is to pay attention to what is going on in your neck of the woods, literally.

⇒ I want to encourage YOU to start TODAY! ⇐

This is why I created the #gardenjournalchallenge a Garden Journal Challenge so I can keep track of all the growing goodness! (and sometimes not so goodness”

⇒What I like to keep track of:

  • Weather through the entire growing season
  • Planting Dates
  • Frost Dates (spring & fall)
  • When I started my seeds in doors
  • What varieties did well or not
  • Where I purchased onion sets, strawberries, tree’s and seeds from.
  • How many I was able to harvest
  • Keeping track of what I was able to preserve
  • My notes such as techniques I tried
  • How I planted certain items (trellis/ground/etc)
  • Things I tried and failed
  • Things I tried and succeeded
  • Things I learned and would like to implement the next year
  • What fertilizer or sprays I used
  • What worked for pests & disease
  • Germination rates
  • What needed to be replanted
  • And an overall wrap up of how the season went
  • To do list

Always include a layout/ map of your garden areas

How to start:

This is your chance to keep track of all the things, to keep a good reminder of reality, what worked, didn’t work. To keep on LEARNING.  Grab a favorite notebook and start today.

Every growing season I grab my journal as well as review it in January & February as I’m itching to get back into the garden. So time to plan on what seeds to buy (if I haven’t already, or seed saved), see what techniques I want to try differently this year and get a game plan going. Also a great time to draw a layout.

This is why I created the #gardenjournalchallenge a Garden Journal Challenge so I can keep track of all the growing goodness! (and sometimes not so goodness”
